Let’s Talk Thca And How It Differs From Other Cannabinoids (Including Thc)

You’ve undoubtedly heard of THC – it’s one of the most popular and abundant cannabinoids in pure cannabis oil, as well as the primary psychoactive component in the cannabis plant.

But do you know about THCA?

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, or THCA, is a naturally occurring acid-based cannabinoid found in raw and live cannabis plants, and it’s the pre-cursor to THC. As the plant dries, a heating process known as “decarboxylation” turns the THCA into THC.

All THC-rich cannabis strains that have not yet undergone the decarboxylation process contains the cannabinoid THCA. Levels of THCA are particularly high in living or freshly harvested plants.

The Benefits and Side Effects of THCA

Though similar in certain aspects, the properties and effects of THCA are markedly different compared to its chemical cousin, THC. However, researchers are only just beginning to scratch the surface of the possibilities of this lesser known cannabinoid.

According to Leafly:

There isn’t enough research on THCA to definitively state what it can treat and with what degree of efficacy, but preliminary research and anecdotal evidence suggest that THCA will play a pivotal role in cannabis medicine as the industry propels forward.

Based on the studies that have been done on THCA, the cannabinoid has been shown to provide such potential benefits as:

  • Anti-inflammation treatment for sufferers of arthritis and lupus
  • Neuroprotection against neurodegenerative diseases
  • Antiemetic effects on nausea and loss of appetite
  • Limiting cell growth in certain patients with prostate cancer
  • Symptom relief from individual cases of insomnia, muscle spasms and pain

Of course, more research needs to be done to confirm these and other health benefits of THCA and the future role it will play in cannabinoid treatment, but it is certainly something the CPBE team will be keeping a close eye on!
